Christmas 2020 - some positives?

It’s sure as heck going to be hard to find positives during a Christmas full of so many negatives, sad stories and lonely people.

BUT, it’s 2020, normal rules do not apply, so here goes …….

  • To those of you spending the day on your own:

The pressure’s off.
If you fancy beans on toast for Christmas dinner, you can.
If you want to stay under the duvet until midday, you can.
If you usually have to share your favourite Quality Street, this year, you can scoff the lot!

  • To the couples who won’t be with the rest of the family:

The pressure’s off.
If you don’t want to cook a full Christmas dinner, you don’t have to.
You don’t have to follow usual family traditions, you can spend the day doing whatever you want.
You don’t have to spend it with that opinionated uncle or the mother-in-law!

  • To the families who usually have relatives to stay:

You’ve got a year off.
No need to wash and iron bed linen, and make all the guest beds.
There’s much less crockery to wash and less mess to clear up.
No heavy discussions about politics or religion!

  • Tips for the first time turkey cooks

Don’t put yourself under pressure.
Make sure you defrost it thoroughly - like, start now!
Work out the cooking time depending on the size of the whole bird, or crown.
And, if it doesn't cook in time like happened to me two years ago (it was raw inside), stick it back in the oven, play games or watch TV for the next 3 hours.

  • To everyone

I know it’s a weird way to look at it, but it’s a life experience! Certainly not one I ever expected to be faced with, but I’m embracing the changes forced on us in the knowledge that:

I’m keeping those around me safe.
I’ll appreciate future Christmas celebrations, even more.
I’m already excited about the parties Christmas 2021 will bring.
How about planning a Springmass celebration in May?

In all seriousness though, if you’re struggling with not being able to spend this usually very special family time with your loved ones, there are many organisations out there to help, so don’t be afraid to call, email or message them. Here are a few suggestions: Mind.org.uk MarieCurrie.org.uk GiveUsAShout.org

Stay safe and positive. The only negative being you’re Covid test result!

Sending love, support and lots of virtual hugs to you all.
